Joseph Mohlakoana relinquished his position as unit manager of West Vaal Hospital’s Wellness Clinic at the end of October 2005.
In his final three-month report between July and October 2005, clinic visits had increased significantly from 400 to 500 a month. Mohlakoana attributes this to a higher intake of people presenting for VCT. He reports that at the end of September 2005, 490 people were on ART.
Sister Veronica Magetse, who worked with Mohlakoana in the clinic, is acting unit manager until the position is filled. |

Johanna Moleko received a peer education certificate in February 2005, now gives talks and in-service training on a range of HIV/AIDS-related subjects.
Since her diagnosis, she has remained in good health through a regimen of anti-retroviral medication and a healthy diet of fresh fruit and vegetables. She was a motivational speaker at a VCT campaign held at Vaal River’s West Vaal Clinic on 24 August 2005, making such an impact that almost all of the more than 100 people who attended subsequently reported for VCT; and two people who hadn’t disclosed their status started to attend the Wellness Clinic.
Moleko still works a regular 07:00 to 15:30 nursing shift on weekdays, and also finds time to lead a support group which she started in September 2005. |

Further tests were carried out on other forms of residual spraying and compared with those conducted in 2004. The cost-effectiveness of residual spraying is also being investigated.
In 2006 there will be a review of Dr Richard Hunt’s malaria vector survey and insecticide susceptibility assay on mosquito populations at Geita.
